UMBH Notice of NCQA Accreditation

NCQA AccreditationUniversity of Miami Behavioral Health; a division of the University of Miami Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Miller School of  Medicine was granted a three-year full accreditation as a Managed Behavioral Health Organization (MBHO) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) effective April 15, 2003 for commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid members.

In both March 2006 and March 2009, UMBH was reaccredited with a perfect score in all categories.  NCQA full accreditation and reaccreditation is granted for a period of three years to those MBHO's and HMO's that have excellent programs for continuous quality improvement and meet NCQA’s rigorous standards. NCQA is an independent, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to measuring the quality of America’s health care. NCQA accreditation is a nationally recognized evaluation that purchasers, regulators, and consumers can use to assess MBHO's and HMO's. NCQA accreditation evaluates how well an MBHO manages all parts of its delivery system; physicians, other practitioners, hospitals, and administrative services; in order to continuously improve health care for its members. NCQA accreditation standards are set high to encourage MBHO's to continuously enhance their quality. NCQA has approximately 60 standards for quality in seven categories:

  1. quality management and improvement
  2. accessibility, availability, referral, and triage
  3. utilization management
  4. credentialing and recredentialing
  5. members’ rights and responsibilities
  6. preventive behavioral health care services
  7. clinical evaluation and treatment records
